Movie Review:
Chak De India: Shahrukh Khan starrer directed by Shimit Amin. Interesting. Our cinema is making an attempt at last. It is seeking to take new paths in its own orbit. Chak De is surely one is this direction. No- this is not a master piece that you would savour. It is an experience that does not hurt. It takes you on the playing filed- a risk a film maker takes against the history of our b.o. Remember except Lagaan no Hindi film till date has made it big.
Unlike Hip Hip Hurray and the rest, sport is not the background. It is the film. Also it is moves away from the more popular Indian sport cricket and delves with the aspirations of women hockey.
The film maker therefore takes on a double risk proposition and still makes an engrossing movie. The film deals with Kabir Khan( Shahrukh) who does a Ranjan Negi-only this time over it is not a goal keeper who is shamed and insulted for no fault of his but the captain of the hockey team that looses to Pakistan in a final .
Predictably the nation blames Kabir and questions his integrity. The script does not spend too much time on how insults are heaped and how the in focus man suddenly disappears from public life and lives in shame. Seven years down the line he takes the most unconverted job: coach of the Indian Women hockey team. The challenge is first to get a team in place. The next is to get the approach and attitude of the team in proper perspective.
Then to fight the powers that be to get the basic minimum requirements in place, fight official apathy then get the team to win matches and finally in a dramatic finale help them win the World Cup. Purged of his insult the hero walks back to the uncrowded hall of fame.
The film deals with the challenge at many levels and tells the story with fluency. It stops from going overboard and ofcourse settles in the luxury of clichés. The team members chosen from across the country shows how we select heroes for this country.
It also takes a peep into what baggage players bring with them in their psyche. Reflective of many rumours the public hear ( and like to believe) of happenings in the Indian( cricket) dressing room , the clash of egos, the in fights, the politics of the established versus the new is all fictionalised with a degree of credibility.
The actors on board come without too much expectation and perform with a very high degree of sincerity. The lack of image helps and the short roles also does not challenge beyond a point. It is nice also to notice that characters get into a script rather than the other way around. One is bound to make comparisons with Lagaan and one should resist the temptation. One must never forget that Lagaan had a grater vision.
Some films set out with a vision some with a goal. The director must get full credit for chewing what others would not bite – so far so good.Shahrukh Khan always delivers when guarded against the natural ham. Yet again he proves that he is actor with good skills provided he resists the temptation of over doing his bit.
He comes out fit as a fiddle and under plays his role with dignity. In line with his performance in Swades he does a great job. The film is watchable for a variety of reasons. Sincerity the uppermost. Not a gold medalist but a winner noe the less.
